CHosing which steel target is optimal for your applicatoin
3/8″ AR500 has long been the standard for steel shooting targets, and it will remain the entry point for most shooters for a long time. 3/8″ AR500 is the standard because it does most things well. It’s good for all standard and magnum pistol rounds to a limit of 2,800 ft/s and about 3,000 ft/lbs of energy, at the target. Most of your non-magnum rifle rounds that aren’t varmint busters will be fine at 100 yards.
But what if you want to rock some worlds with some some magnum rifle? If you don’t have room to back up further, consider stepping up to 1/2″ AR500 or even to 50 BMG rated 1″ AR500, all available through MOA Targets.
Only going to be shooting rimfire and service pistol? Consider saving some weight and money by using dedicated steel for the purpose, 1/4″ AR400 will handle it fine. For specialty applications, 3/16″ AR400 is just fine. This is generally reserved for standard rimfire only, and typically just for reactive targets or metallic silhouette knockdowns.
One note – the thinner the steel the less margin for error you have, but the better sound you’ll get out of the target system.
